References: Mark 4:1-20, Matthew 13:1-23, and Luke 8:1-15

Parable of the sower talks about 4 different types of seeds that have been sown by the Master.

1. Seed falling on the path, then quickly eaten by the birds

2. Seed falling on rocky places – sprang up quickly, but because of its shallow soil, withered because of the scorching sun

3. Seed falling among thorns – choked and died

4. Seed falling on good soil – grew and multiplied

Seed no 1 fell on a medium without any kind of soil, thus it didn’t even grow. Seed no 2, 3, 4 fell on some sort of different soil which determined its final outcome. What attracts me is the explanation that Jesus made about seed no 2. This seed actually began to grow, you could see some green leaves, and maybe some little fruits on it. But when the heat of the scorching sun came up, it withered quickly as it had little soil. Its little root could not sustain the heat. Its little root just wasn’t strong enough to nourish the plant under severe weather condition.

This seed no 2 speaks loudly in my heart. How does my root look like? From the outside, the plants may look the same, until some severe weather condition comes, and tests its root. The root is the difference. Something invisible from outside, yet holds the sustainability of the plant.

Luke 8:15 describes good soil like having a good and noble heart. Like roots, our heart is invisible to others. Only we and God know the state of our heart. To obtain strong root we must water it regularly, nourish it with proper fertilizers, guide it carefully against any damaging insects or diseases. Once the root is strong and healthy, the plant will automatically grow beautifully, producing fruits. Our heart needs the same treatment as the root. It is often the things that are invisible to others, that matters most in our walk with God. Only by reading His words and prayers can we ensure our heart is noble and strong. Like the plant, the more we nourish our root, the stronger and bigger it becomes. When the scorching heat comes, we shall not wither, as it is well nourished from the inside. Any weapons formed against us shall not prosper when our heart is deep and strong.
